In 2016 alone, Opioids were responsible for more deaths than breast cancer. The epidemic of opioid overdose has become one of the growing concerns in NY and across the US, as patients looking for pain relief are stuck in an infinite cycle of never ending trouble.
The troubles of opioid abuse go a long way in derailing rehabilitation efforts and signaling various problems, such as sudden weight gain and depression. Numerous people who went through surgeries were prescribed opioids by medical practitioners.
However, the treatment went south when patients started taking more of the pills. Not only would this get them addicted to opioids, but the negative side of the pain-relief pills was also starting to dawn on them. Amidst all this, survivors had little chance of recovery. Withdrawal from opioid abuse is really hard, and makes one go through unprecedented trauma in the form of constant nausea and pounding headaches.
The recently proposed Medical Marijuana regulation by the State Department of Health, to qualify opioid use as a qualifying condition for Medical Marijuana, has been made operational on an emergency basis and has opened the doors for a brighter future and better pain relief options for patients with surgical treatment.
The notification by the Department of Health NY allows for the use of Medical Marijuana in all conditions where opioids were formerly prescribed. While MMJ treatment was previously allowed for patients with chronic pain and neuropathy, patients of the following conditions can now benefit from this new qualification:
· Acute Pain
· Persistent Muscle Spasms
· Opioid use Disorder
· Post-Operative Pain Management
Since this new qualification is set up on an emergency basis, people can now immediately benefit from the option of Medical Marijuana for pain relief treatment. Patients that were previously stuck in the vicious cycle of opioid use can now get relief with the use of Medical Marijuana.
The use of Medical Marijuana for pain-relief after surgery will help patients to avoid being addicted to opioid. There are numerous examples of how patients got addicted to opioids and took over 20 of them in a day. These opioids were prescribed by practitioners, but over a period of time, patients got addicted to them.
Opioid overdose had become a serious issue, and a head start was seriously needed. After this regulation, by taking up Medical Marijuana as an alternative to opioid use, patients can drop opioids and avoid being addicted to them. Not only this, but patients can also use opioids and Medical Marijuana on a concurrent basis; meaning that both of these pain-relievers can be taken together. The use of MMJ and opioids together has been researched upon before and results found out that the impact of opioids can be enhanced by taking them in tandem with MMJ. The use of both MMJ and opioids together would help benefit patients that were addicted to more than 20-30 tablets of the drug daily, as they would now be able significant decrease their tablet count.
With the regulation for qualifying opioid use as a qualification for MMJ, the medical kingdom has finally shown signs of catching up with what the patients wanted. By providing MMJ to people who were previously prescribed opioids, the State of NY has shown its interest in moving towards a future of medical rescheduling that would benefit the masses.
